Lamborghini was responsible for the latest dramatic supercar unveil in a mad month for fast cars, with the recession seemingly forgotten at the Frankfurt motor show.   The rather stunning Lamborghini Reventón Roadster is aiming to drag the limelight away from the Ferrari 458, Mercedes SLS and Audi R8 Spyder. It’s the open-top version of the super exclusive supercar Lambo revealed at Frankfurt two years ago. The Murciélago-based Reventon coupe packs a 641bhp version of Lamborghini’s 6.5-litre V12 (from the LP670-4 SV), but the open top version gets an extra 20bhp to combat its additional 25kg of weight. It’s a smart move, ensuring almost identical performance with a 3.4sec sprint to 100kph and 330kph roof-down top speed. Just 20 will be made, costing $ 1.6m each. Bugatti Veyron money, then.

It’ll be 15 times rarer than the Bug, though. You’ve a one in 700 million chance of owning one, they say, meaning you’re more likely to get hit by a meteorite - in case you were wondering.

A six-speed automated-manual is standard and sends the power to all four wheels, while a rear spoiler deploys at 130kph to increase downforce, and changes to a steeper angle at 220kph.

And this is how Lamborghini describes the engine:?‘It reacts with the eagerness of a racing engine to input from the right foot, revving to 8000rpm and beyond, and performing a symphony that sends shudders along the spine. The deep booming bass, the powerful mid-range and the exultant horn section play music that, once heard, can never be forgotten.’

We can’t wait to try it. If we’ll ever get the chance, that is.
