After 10 years and over 110,000 units sold worldwide, the S2000 is no more. The last ever car of Honda’s iconic roadster will roll off the production line in Suzuka, Japan this month, and to commemorate the occasion, S2000 owners from the Evolve Motor Club gathered at the Jebel Ali go kart track.
Inevitably, it was the ever-present economic crisis which led Honda CEO Takeo Fukui to decide it was time to concentrate on environmentally-friendly, mass production cars like the Insight and FCX Clarity, instead of on niche markets.
Sadly, the S2000 will not be replaced. Earlier this year, Fukui also announced the end of the new Honda NSX development, a Honda CR-Z convertible and a new V8 engine.
During the past decade, the S2000 has been honoured with five consecutive International Engine of the Year awards and its 237bhp, 2-litre, 9000rpm VTEC has its last use in the special edition white S2000, which is now only sold in Europe.
‘The S2000 is simple, fun, reliable and good value for money – all the things I looked for when I bought it,’ says Arafaat Ali Khan, who’s owned his Nurburgring Blue S2000 since 2004. ‘It gives you that good feeling every time you step inside.’
The S2000 has also been a popular tuner’s car, with many entering theirs in Auto-X competitions. It’s thought that around 50% of all S2000s bought in the region have been modified in one way or another after purchase. The reason for this, says Arafaat, is that ‘the car lends itself well to modifications – it’s also easy to maintain. I also love it because the car is wonderfully set up car has a timeless quality,’ says Arafaat. The S2000 will certainly be missed.
