Porsche GT2

Porsche GT2

After picking up the GT2 last month, I have been gradually upping the pace as I start to understand its incredible capabilities. As the car was brand new, I have had to be restrained with my driving to allow all the components to bed in, particularly the ceramic brakes as they can get horribly expensive if you have to start replacing pads and discs. The engine has already been run in, as is the case with most modern performance cars, so I pretty quickly started to creep closer to the redline. After about 500km I could no longer resist the temptation to use full power particularly in the lower gears as the acceleration is breathtaking. I have never owned a turbocharged car before and the slug of power that the twin turbos deliver is addictive. Unfortunately, with big power, reliability usually suffers and I got an early taste of that when a very disconcerting noise appeared ever time the engine got to the boost range. Luckily I was very close to the Porsche workshop when this happened, so I quickly diverted there to get the car looked at. A quick peak under the rear bonnet immediately revealed what the problem was.  There is a carbon fibre piece that feeds air from the scoops in the rear wing into the engine. This is connected using a rubber gasket which has a metal clamp around it that holds it in place. This had worked its way loose causing the engine to go into safe mode. Apparently this was a common fault with the 911 turbo and GT2 and was quickly rectified.  Since then I haven’t been in town much so have not been able to spend much time behind the wheel of the GT2. When I got back from my trip a couple of days ago I found that someone had scrawled the word “Widow Maker” in the dust on the car. I guess I’m not the only one who’s aware of the fearsome reputation of the ultimate 911.
