This month we've had Gulf Sport sifting through a big brown box of oily bits, finding random components and attaching them to the Golf. There is still a fair way to go, but we (and when I say 'we' I do mean they) are getting there.
It doesn't sound like the most likely of reasons to start jumping around the office, kissing all of the lovely evo office personnel, but that is exactly what I did once I heard the new $ 120 fuel tank had found a new home underneath my priceless Mk1. The lightweight tank (if you can make out where it is in the picture above) is nothing too special to look at - effectively a standard-issue 34-litre Mk1 fuel tank that has been chopped down to 19 litres, and then welded back together. But before this act took place the tank was filled full of plastic gauze to control surge.
The tank itself was sourced from the UK, courtesy of the young and very beautiful Claire Tippet's race car running in the VW Cup. When the Golf eventually retired from the championship, for track day duties, a standard-size tank was required, thus leaving the mini tank surplus to requirement. It is the same car that donated last month's gearbox, clutch, gearbox mounting and Quaife Limited Slip Differential.
Also this month, Gulf Sport got their knuckles into the Quaife 2.9-turn quick rack, supplied by MSW in Dubai. The addition of this steering rack (along with the LSD and Eibach anti-roll bars) will go a long way to neutralise the high levels of torque steer.
However, the quicker steering response - achieved with a 25 per cent reduction in ratio and resulting in one less turn lock-to-lock - will ultimately cost me a greater increase in effort. Better get myself down to the gym sharpish I think.
