KTM LC4 640 Supermoto

Luca Cima finally persuaded our editor to add his KTM Supermoto to the Fleet. He must have felt sorry for him, his beloved 993 Turbo has spent the last few weeks in the hospital with an oil leak. Meanwhile, the 350Z Convertible has been lapping the Ring, while Jethro has been getting used to the R32's DSG gearbox

KTM LC4 640 Supermoto

I bought this two-wheeler because of the crazy traffic in Dubai. I was looking for something that might give me a thrill in the daily drive through the labyrinth of this metropolitan madness.

There it is, the legendary sport bike brand from Austria, which started the production of this type of sports road bike back in the late 90s with a clear objective for a race-like means of transport. I bought it new and loaded it with all the extras the power parts catalogue suggested. Akrapovic Racing pipes, racing air filter, bigger carburettor jets, electronic rpm counter, sliders, racing pads on the awesome 320mm Brembo front brake, hand protectors and aluminium chain cover.

The torquey engine is a real symphony and I'd probably end up in jail in Europe for the amount of decibels the Akrapovic pipes create. Fortunately down here in the UAE, the police are still pretty understanding. The handling of this small animal is comparable to a Catheram in the car world. Only 130kg of weight translates as quick cornering ability and the fat tyres give plenty of stability. Good brakes and gearbox make it a superb and safe daily drive.

I actually decided to test this LC4 on a recent open trackday and my friend Andy supplied me with some racing tyres to see if we could mix it up with the sport bikers at the Dubai Autodrome. The result was pretty amazing, especially considering the lack of speed on the straights. The bike was significantly faster than any other bikes in mid corners and under braking. The awesome Dunlop slicks had plenty of grip for a whole four sessions of 20 minutes. Next step is to get a finer tuning of the front forks, which are diving too much due to the powerful racing pads.

This rough and rugged means of transport is making my daily commute a real thrill and I am kind of happy that no one can see my stupid smile under my helmet when I switch it on in the morning and the Akrapovic pipe shakes the air around me and sets off the car alarm of my neighbour's Mitsubishi Lancer.
