SPLIT PERSONALITY COMPACT SUV ARRIVES

VW TIGUAN

Rating:

VW TIGUAN

There are two parts to Budapest, in Hungary, one part is Buda, the other Pest. These two segments are separated by a stretch of water. The hotel I'm hauled up in for the international launch of the Volkswagen Tiguan is on the 'pest' side, funnily enough. Just like the city, the new mini SUV from VW also has two sides - a cross pollination of hatchback and a compact off-roader. Bottom line the Tiguan is a miniature Toureg (which it shares a keen resemblance to) and being a little dinkier is a clear competitor for the RAV4 from Toyota and the Honda CR-V.

Most of the launch was spent trundling along mundane highways, literally parked up in the hustle and bustle of downtown Budapest, as well as a brief section of sharp turns through the tree-sheltered mountain roads. There was also a token off-road activity, which the Tiguan mastered with impeccable manners, demonstrating that the small 4MOTION all wheel-drive VW can deal with most of what you can throw at it, as well as being an uncompromised road car. Thanks to a blend of Golf and Passat chassis technology, the ride is firm and responsive, but surprisingly comfortable, allowing you to push the car-like attributes as you would a spritely hatchback. There is a mass of grip available and no alarming moments, as you'd expect when this 5ft 6in SUV comes barrelling into a corner.

There is another version of Tiguan, aimed more at semi-serious off-roading, complete with sump guard, higher bumper and 28-degree angle of approach capability, compared to the 18-degree front end of the Sport version. There is also an off-road switch that automatically activates a support system, including hill-descent assistance.

The car we predominantly tested was the six-speed manual 148bhp 14-litre petrol variant, which was smooth, but gutless Ð 100kph in 9.3sec and a top speed of 192kph. Quiet for sure, making long journeys pleasant but for real zing the 138bhp diesel is a welcomed option, if it ever makes it to the Middle East market.

Inside there's oodles of room, allowing three grown adults to stretch out in the rear, in comfort. The driver position is pleasant enough. It's hardy too as most VWs are and well built. There's also space for ten trillion golf bags in the boot, great all-round visibility, and the option to tow a camel box.
